In September 1984 Chet Jazak gathered 14 couples at
Highland Elementary School to begin 30 weeks of square dance lessons.
In May of 1985 twelve couples graduated; and, helped by Chet Jazak and the
Brecksville Department of Human Resources, 8 couples began with a dance in
December of 1985. However, because joining the Cleveland Federation
was vital to being recognized by other clubs and for publicity purposes, the
first official dance was January of 1986. Of the charter member, only
Cheryl and David Storgard are still dancing.
Our club has gone through many changes. Originally
the club met on the second Friday of the month, but a conflict with another
area club caused a change to the third Friday. After Highland School,
we met at St. Michael's Woodside, St. Matthias Church, Brecksville Methodist
Church and now dance at the Broadview Heights Recreation Center.
Ed and Rita Mickas were are first president couples
followed by Harold and Marian Davidson and Cheryl and David Storgard.
Brecksville has had a history of special dances. The first specials
were with national callers Jerry Story and Bob Baier and later with local
callers.
