Welcome to the web site of Broken Wheel Squares of
Kirtland, Ohio.
We are a Plus-level Square
Dance Club with Round Dancing between tips. You'll find us at the
Community of Christ Church, 9017 Chillicothe Road (Rt 306) Kirtland, OH 44094 (see
map) on the
1st and 3rd Friday from 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM (Sept - May). We also have
summer dances on selected Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM. Check out our
dance schedule, come
join us when you can.
Classes for new dancers are held on Mondays from 7:00 to 9:00 PM (September - April) at
the Community of Christ Church
in Kirtland.

Our lesson caller is Gene Hammond
Gene Hammond started teaching our lessons in 2011.
He teaches classes for Mainstream thru Plus levels Mondays September thru April at 7:00 pm.

The Broken Wheel Square Dance Club was formed in April, 1967 in Lake County Ohio.
A brief history of important events is as follows:
| BWS TIMELINE | |
| April 21, 1967 | The charter members meet in the
garage of Walt and Natella Shell and form the new square dance club. It was named the Sidewinders. Mike Cochran was a club founder, charter member, teacher and club caller. |
| May 2, 1967 | The Sidewinders hold their second meeting and change the name to Broken Wheels. They also choose the club colors of yellow and brown. |
| May 5, 1967 | The Broken Wheels sponsor their first dance. |
| June 30, 1967 | BWS enters its first float in a parade (Mardi Gras.) |
| 1970 | Peg Brooks is elected as club secretary. She has been in the club longer than any other member. |
| 1972 | Dewey Berry became the club caller |
| 1973 | Julian "Bud" Bolt became the teacher and a club co-caller with Dewey Berry. We begin our tradition of having a cake walk. The first Sunshine Committee is formed. |
| 1980 | We begin our tradition of having a 50/50 raffle. |
| 1983 | Francis Queener became the teacher and club caller |
| 1987 | Bob and Judy Calkins bring the Friendship Song back with them after being at an International Square Dance Convention in Germany. |
| 1987 | Peg Brooks makes the banner that we still use today. |
| 1995 | Bob and Judy Calkins are named Honor Couple |
| 1996 | Francis Queener retires. Ray Miller takes over as teacher and caller.. |
| 1999 | Bev Schumann teaches her first class for BWS. |
| 2001 | Ed and Bev Legat are named Honor Couple. |
| 2001 | Bev Schumann retires, Jody Serlick takes over as the teacher.. |
| 2002 | Dick and Pat Winter are named Honor Couple. |
| 2002 | Broken Wheel Squares celebrated
its 35 year history with a series of special events at each dance including a dinner dance on April 19 |
| 2007 | 40th Anniversary Dinner Dance |
| 2008 | Debbie and Larry Candow are named Honor Couple |
| 2011 | Jody Serlick retires, Gene Hammond takes over teaching the lessons.. |
| 2012 | Club celebrated its 45th year with a dinner dance in April |
