DUTIES OF DAS&RDC ORBITING SQUARES CHAIRMAN

1.       Thirty minutes before each Council meeting set up a table, so the clubs can sign in to steal the Council banner.  (Loose leaf sheets work best, several clubs can sign in at once with them.)  They must have 3 squares at one meeting or 1 square each meeting for three consecutive months, or 2 squares at one meeting and 1 square at the following meeting.  (Need a small calendar to put down retrieving dates.)  Need at least 2 weeks notice to retrieve from a club.

2.       In September make presentation to the Council and present Banner stealing rules to all Council Reps.  Explain what the Orbiting Squares are and ask for new members (at least 2 couples from each club).

3.       After a club has successfully stolen the banner arrange for the Orbiting Squares to return the visit.  Call each couple listed to tell them of the date and place of this visit.  Attend, or delegate a representative to attend retrieval dances and present a certificate and pin to each club who has stolen the council banner.  At the return dance verify the number of Orbiting Squares members in attendance.

4.       Make a monthly report at the Council meeting of the clubs who have stolen the banner that meeting and present each club with a small traveling banner.  Report the clubs visited and the number of couples who helped return the visit.  Give a copy of the report to the Secretary.

5.       Order the Orbiting Squares badges for new members and give the money to the Council Treasurer.  Members pay for their own badges.

6.       Be sure to order more certificates to be printed when you have 15 left.

ORBITING SQUARES

We would like you to know the purpose, aims and policies of the Orbiting Squares.  Our Purpose is to further the fun and friendship of Square Dancing by delivering THE COUNCIL CERTIFICATE as a group to Clubs that steal the Council Banner and by extending to them the good will of the Council with a cordial invitation to attend and participate in Council meetings.

We want to encourage subscriptions to the Denver Area Square Dance Bulletin, but not with a "hard sell" attitude.  We want to be prepared to take subscriptions and forward them to the proper people.

Our Aim is to mingle with and enjoy dancing with the various Clubs with the hope of stimulating inter-club dancing, which will let everyone enjoy bigger and better dances.

Our Policies are few.  We have only one requirement - that you must belong to a member club of the Denver Area Square Dance Council to be a member of the Orbiting Squares.  When you go dancing as an Orbiting Square, you sign in as an Orbiting Square member.  If you are retrieving or stealing a banner for your own Club, you sign in as a member of your own Club, but you may sign in as both a member of the Orbiting Squares and your own Club.  You may wear your Orbiting Squares ribbon at any time you wish (to promote the Orbiting Squares), but always wear your own Club Badge to promote your own Club.

The Orbiting Squares will visit a Club to take the Council Certificate to them only once during a Council year.  We always welcome new members.

A Club stealing the Council Banner must dance the first and last Tip at the Council Mini-Dance, held after each Council meeting.  The Club must have at least 3 squares of dancers present at a Council meeting to steal the Council Banner.  This may also be accomplished by having at least one square present at as many consecutive Council meetings as it takes to make the three required squares.  Because of summer vacation the Council Banner cannot be stolen at the June Council meeting.

If possible, Clubs stealing the Council Banner should give the Orbiting Squares ample advance notice of the desired date of a return visit to the Club by the Orbiting Squares, so there will be time to notify Orbiting Squares' members of the visit to your Club.  Members of the Orbiting Squares, like you and I, sometimes have other commitments and are not available on short notice.  The Council cannot promise a Club a certain number of Orbiting Squares for the return visit, but with a lot of support from each and every one of you, we will do our utmost to make a good showing.  We suggest that you might want to appoint two couples, the same as you do Council Representatives, to represent you Club with the Orbiting Squares.  With enough members to call upon to represent the Council on the Orbiting Squares, a member would be called upon only a few times each year to help us.

When a Club steals the Council Banner, it should have at least two dates ready to give to the Orbiting Squares Chairman for the return visit.  Dates are set up on a first-come first-serve basis.
