President’s Message presented by Jim Langdon

We trust that you all had a joyous Thanksgiving holiday, and are looking forward to more family gatherings and holiday parties coming up! We drove back to the Midwest for Thanksgiving and stopped along the way at 3 different square dance clubs to relax and see what other States had to offer some Colorado dancers. The first club we visited was in Nebraska, folks there were very nice and welcoming; but we were amused to see many of this club’s dancers racing from the dance floor to the radio in the kitchen to listen to the Nebraska college football game then race back to announce the score between tips. Who says that square dancers can’t multi-task? Our next square dance stop was in Illinois. This club had been in touch with us before about our own Council’s Timberline Topper club plan, and had implemented it with fantastic results. We happened to be there on the club’s 2nd year anniversary celebration! The room was filled with enthusiastic dancers that just couldn’t get enough dancing, the energy was refreshing! The last dance we attended was in Michigan, at a club that is just getting started. Because of the nearness to Thanksgiving Day they had only had a few members in town. We were impressed with the caller who actually called while simultaneously dancing in the square, so that we could have a dance. So, we were able to get a small cross-section of the state of square dancing from here to the mid-west. The conclusions we reached by our small sampling was a reiteration of the importance of continually recruiting new people into square dancing. That is how that electric enthusiasm is created. So if you are looking to make your club strong and vibrant, then we stress that you ought to be continually thinking about where and how you can recruit new dancers. We hope that our new 1-2-3 recruiting program will help motivate you to think of new avenues to explore in exposing more people to this activity that we all love. You can also ask us for our 157 recruiting ideas, take a leap of faith and try some new avenues! There is no “magic wand” to wave to get new dancers to try our activity; it takes a commitment of all your clubs members to recruit to achieve success. December seems to be a month of miracles, why don’t you focus on making some miracles in your own club?

Dancing Feet are Happy Feet, Help Keep Them Feet Happy.

Respectfully submitted, Jim and Marcia Langdon – DAS&RDC Co-Presidents

Insurance Reported by Gene Allen

Currently, 11 clubs have sent in their rosters and money for the insurance. Clubs need to have insurance to get coverage for their facilities. Gene Allen said that some facilities that are having New Year’s Eve dances have already requested proof of insurance. The insurance company has said that they will not be insured after midnight, January 1st if they don’t get their insurance back to Gene Allen on time.

Fund Raising Reported by Elaine Adamson

Over the last two months, with your help, we recycled 125 pounds of aluminum cans, foil, trays, etc. This was worth $.61 per pound for a total of $76.25.

Also recycled was 7 pounds of steel.  This was up 2 cents a pound to the fantastic rate of $.07 per pound for a total of $.49.

In addition, an old lawn chair frame & aluminum cooking pot were recycled.  That was 5 pounds at the rate of $.47 per pound for a total of $2.35.

This all adds up to the GRAND Total of $79.09.  Les & I contributed a penny to bring the total that we are turning over tonight to $79.10.

Tonight I am hoping that you all brought your empty beverage cans for us to recycle.

A question for all of you - would there be a way to collect the cans at each dance and have your club representatives bring the cans to each Council meeting?  Would the Club representatives consider doing this?  Please talk to me after the meeting.

Respectfully submitted, Les and Elaine Adamson, Fund Raising

Bulletin Presented by Dianne Gum

We thank the December Bulletin Assembly crew from Mountaineers and look forward to seeing crews from Plus.com and Sunflower Squares on December 28 to assemble the January Bulletins. Due to various holiday schedules that week, please let Debbie Hoyt know an approximate number that will be attending.

A special thanks goes to Brian Reid for his diligent work on getting the minutes to us so we can meet our deadlines. Since the January meeting is a week later, we also appreciate all efforts to get items for his minutes to him early so he can help us meet our deadline.

Our thanks goes to ALL of the club and council contributors for all of your 2010 Bulletin content and help, and we look forward to continuing to create issues that you can be proud of in 2011.

The Red Book is going around for reps to verify the calendar information for the January Bulletin. Who has not seen the Red Book? We want to make sure that every club gets a chance to check the calendar information, and we apologize to any club that did not get to check their December calendar information at the last meeting. We know how important these few minutes are in helping keep club calendar information updated and accurate.

Also for clubs who change officers in January, please contact me, Dianne Gum with the contact information of your new President ASAP.

We hope that all of you enjoyed reading the Christmas messages from your dancing friends and family in the December Bulletin and a special thanks goes to the dancers and clubs that participated this year.

Respectively Submitted Debbie Hoyt and presented by Dianne Gum

Marketing & Publicity Delivered by Joan Gaunt

Great News! The council has a new phone number. It is 720-412-7789. So we are joining the new phone number with the new website address; I am able to provide FREE publicity materials to you. Please take advantage of the business cards and tri-fold brochures to advertise to the general public that square and round dancing is alive and well in this area. It is to your advantage to advertise all year long.

The person at the other end of the line of the information phone is Sue Bell. She has been a dancer in this area for many years. Her thoughts are as follows: “Basically......I can only give information that I have from either the web site or bulletin.  If a club needs me to have something not published in either of those places, they can call the info phone 720-412-7789 or email it to:  squareandrounddanceindenver@gmail.comsquareandrounddanceindenver@gmail.com

Please let Sue Bell know that you appreciate her volunteering her time and talents to give our organization a human voice.

Orbiting Squares Report delivered by Kent and Pam Long

We didn’t have any retrievals of the Council Banner during the past month, but five clubs managed to steal the banner at the council meeting and anniversary dance. If you haven’t had a chance to read the December bulletin yet, the five clubs are the Columbiners, Scootbacks, Swing Thru’s, Rollin’ Wheels and Mountaineers.

We’ve gotten retrieval dates from the clubs and have posted the information on our Orbiting Squares web calendar. These retrievals are to take place after the first of the year and will be listed at the end of our January bulletin report. For those who want a jump on planning and don’t have internet access (you do get the bulletin, don’t you?) we have the clubs’ retrieval dates on slips of paper to pass out.

A current list of clubs who have already stolen the Council Banner this year was on the sign-in desk when you came in. Did you notice it? This serves as a reminder for you. If your club is on the list, you don’t have to start a stealing sheet as each club can only steal the banner once during the council year.

I took a sneak peek at the new DAS&RDC website. Although it’s still a work in process, it looks like you will be able to get into the Orbiting Squares calendar a lot easier. The new web site’s address is in the December bulletin. That’s how I found out about it. I’m not going to tell you how to get to the calendar as this may change until the website is complete. However, it looks fairly obvious. Take a look. I think you’ll like it.

Tonight, three clubs have stolen the banner – Hilltoppers, Scuffed Shoes and Square Pegs. Each club came up and had their pictures taken.

Respectfully submitted, Kent and Pam Long, Orbiting Squares

Web Master Reported by Ron Fuchs

On January 9, 2011, I will hold a seminar how to get a gmail email account, and how to update your clubs dance calendar as well as ways to get a new web site. The next educational meeting is January 9, 2011 before the Council meeting when I will teach you the “how to” of updating your own club calendars. If you want to look at the updates already made on the new website, you can get on the website at www.denversquaredancing.com.

Class Liaison Reported by Mike Zimmerman

The Mountaineers graduated eight new dancers on November 29 at the Valley View Church of God. The ceremonies were attended by many angels of the club. The instructors were Don Furnish and Betty Falk.

The Rocky Mountain Squares, Rocky Tops, Rollin’ Wheels and Square Halos class is scheduled to graduate on December 12 at the Wheat Ridge Grange. The instructor is Bear Miller.

The information I have right now is that the following clubs are planning to begin new classes after the first of the year: Grand Squares, Mountaineers, Never Summer Squares, Rollin’ Wheels, Scootbacks and Timberline Toppers.

I want to give special recognition to Alan and Annie Strobel of the Rollin’ Wheels. They had encouraged some friends to start square dancing and hoped they would be able to join in the lessons hosted by their club. When the dates did not work out, Alan and Annie introduced their friends to square dancing through the Mountaineers lessons and were angels through the entire session of Mountaineers lessons. Alan and Annie Strobel were recognized at the Mountaineers graduation for this effort, but I want to use them as an example of what cooperation between clubs and their members can do to bring new dancers into our fun, fun, fun.

A reminder for all clubs desiring to request the 1-2-3 payment from the Council, please advise your class coordinators to keep the records from the class in order to substantiate your request.

I apologize if I missed your club’s lessons or got the wrong information. Please let me know so I can correct the information.

If any other clubs are planning to begin lessons soon, please let me know so I can make plans to visit the club.

Respectfully submitted, Mike Zimmerman, Class Visitation

CRDA Rep Reported by Jim and Judy Taylor

DACCA Rep to DAS&RDC Presented by Bob Gaunt

At the November meeting of DACCA a discussion was had about how the new dancer dances are labeled. These dances were listed as follows in both the November and December issues of the Bulletin; “New Dancer Dance”, “Beginners Dance”, “Beginner Dance”, “Beginner Hoedown”, This is NOT a reflection of the Bulletin staff, they just print what is given to them.

The feelings of the members of DACCA are that this may be very confusing to class coordinators and the new dancers who are in class. CALLERLAB has gone to great lengths to standardize the different programs that are danced at club dances. DACCA members believe it would help if DAS&RDC clubs would do the same for those dances that are geared for the dancers who are still in class. The members of DACCA would like to see the following: 1) one title picked for all of these dances, 2) a list of the calls to be used advertised as per the CALLERLAB Mainstream program. 3) The calls used should be only those calls that the newest class members know. We acknowledge that different clubs start lessons at different times and that some teach twice a week while other only teach once a week. We still feel that something could be worked out so that the promotion of these dances and the programming for these dances for the newer dancer a very positive experience.

Members of DACCA would be more than happy to help member clubs of DAS&RDC to develop such as listing to be used in the future. DACCA believes these dances are very important and should be continued,

Some of the clubs who sponsor dancers for dancers in class also include a Plus tip in the middle of these dances. It was the feeling of the DACCA members that the inclusion of any dance, i.e. Plus or advanced round dance, that the newer dancers cannot participate in should be discouraged or at least held until the end of the dances. It was also noted that those who are in Round Dance lessons are ALSO New Dancers to that part of our activity and thus these dances should include opportunities for them to participate.

Respectfully submitted, Bob Gaunt

CSSDA Flooring Reported by Dan Pantano

Dan Pantano appointed committee leader reported that in asking the clubs to participate in this discussion, that there is no interest in the Denver Council owning the flooring. Therefore, no further action will be taken at this time. Marcia Langdon noted that the State was going to get rid of the flooring they currently have by January 1st 2011 so if anyone or a club wanted some of it, they could contact the CSSDA State President, Karen Copeland.

NEW BUSINESS Presented by Jim Langdon

Jim Langdon noted that at the last meeting the 1-2-3 program was approved a portion of the plan required a newly graduated dancer to attend dances, and have their attendance documented. Jim Langdon developed a form which was presented and approved by the E-Board for this purpose. The Council will get these forms printed and will make them available to all the clubs by the next Council meeting.

Jim Langdon noted the Timberline Toppers have no dance on January 1, 2010 – there is an error in the bulletin.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by President, Marcia Langdon.
