“the club with a heart”

Old and new came together on January 14 at our old timers dance as we enjoyed an old timers special and also welcomed new dancers in our new class. We had an interesting array of old time outfits and hats, but the favorite outfit was overalls! As always, there was plenty of good old time cooking. We enjoyed ten pots of soups, beans and chili with cornbread on the side, and of course delicious desserts. Thanks to all of our good old-time cooks. Also, a big thank you to our guest caller Bob Sloman, guest rounds cuer Sandra Heer and guest line dance cuer Jeanette Bowen. It was a pleasure to have you and dance to your calls and cues.

We had a great “red and white” turn out for our Valentine's dance on February 11. Eddie Smith added a special and fun touch to the evening by taking pictures of couples against a backdrop of hearts, flowers and cupids. I am quite sure that most couples felt just a little more romantic after cozying up together to have their picture made. Our refreshment table was laden with valentine sweets for sweethearts. A big thank you to all the folks who helped with fun food and decorations and gave all of such a lovely evening.

We were privileged once again to host this year's St. Jude's dance on March 28. This dance has a special meaning to our own Paul and Pattie Henze and really brings the local square dance community together in a special way. We had a great turnout and the dance floor was jammed packed with squares. We appreciate all of you who came out to show your support of such a worthy cause and did a good job of filling our donation jar to the half way point. This special and inspirational evening started off in a whirl of round dancing cued by Sandra Heer and Dennis McMinds. Guest callers were Roy Hawes, Ray Donohoo, Joe Kelly and Wendell Longwith. Guest lines cuer was Jeanette Bowen. After the first rowdy combo mainstream-plus tip a St. Jude's child and her mother gave a moving testimony about the work done there and the St. Jude's children blessed us with a song “You Are My Sunshine”. We had over twice as many donations for the silent auction this year. I saw everything from an Elvis Lamp to horse blankets and everything else in between including a knight in shining armor and carpet. There were nine tables of items and also four racks of clothes for sale. We appreciate everything that was done to help raise money for St. Jude. Also thanks to all of the folks that helped with refreshments. Sandra McKaig

Did You Know

The 1950's comic strip, Li'l Abner put out a square dance book titled: The Official Li'l Abner Square Dance Handbook by Fred Leifer (1953)...This Book is available on the Internet. Nasty Canasta is the villain who is wanted and eventually pursued by Daffy Duck in a couple of cartoons. In Drip-Along

Daffy Canasta is wanted for square dance calling, and in My Little Duckaroo, Canasta is wanted for square dancing in a round room. Each wanted poster also has a joke entailing square dancing. This is an “inside joke” to the square dancing that use to take place between the workers of the Looney Tunes animation shorts. On January 31, 1992 Dogbert of the Dilbert comic strip became a square dance caller.
