As your constituents and in conjunction with the United Square Dancers of America, Inc., (USDA), we respectfully ask you to Co-sponsor H. R. 645, to designate Square Dance as the National Folk Dance. This bill may be cited as the " Promenade Act".

H.R. 645 was introduced in the 1st Session of the 108th Congress, to amend title 36, United States Code, to designate Square Dance as the National Folk Dance by U. S. Representative Edward Whitfield, KY. The Square Dance is a traditional form of family recreation and encompasses all age groups, (youth through senior) and also includes the handicapable dancer. It is a healthy form of activity that exercises the body, heart and mind, and is very politically correct activity.

Square dance is a great part of our American heritage and history that should be given official recognition by Congress. Thirty-one states that have passed legislation designating Square Dance as their State Folk Dance: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia. Square dance groups in foreign countries help keep alive a heritage and tradition that predates the birth of this great Nation: Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Philippines and New Zealand to name a few.

Again, we respectfully ask you Co-sponsor the "Promenade Act" and bring this rich heritage and tradition in the history of our country the recognition it deserves.

A petition with ____ original signatures of members of the Idaho Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs is attached.
