Marilyn's Summer Muse

September 2003

This summer, I have and am about to experience many firsts.  I will scatter them throughout this article as well as some “useful conversions”: that may or may not relate to the experience, but hopefully will keep this article entertaining.

Given the old adage "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,"
the first step of a one-mile journey:
1 Milwaukee.

The Swing Thru’s have a busy September planned.
We will be participating the Gateway to the Rockies Parade.

Last year our Patriotic Float (10 rations: 1 decoration)

won first prize that came with a check that boasted our treasury and our morale.
We will also start our class in September and look forward to the enthusiasm of new dancers as well as meeting new friends.

While at the National Convention in Oklahoma City,
I first visited the Oklahoma Zoo.

Speed of a tortoise breaking the sound barrier: Mach Turtle

I also visited a traveling Titanic Exhibit.

Time it takes to sail 220 yards at 1 nautical mile per hour: Knot-furlong

My first cruise on the Carnival Spirit.
I sure hope it has a better ending than the Titanic.
This will be my first visit to Alaska.

Ratio of an igloo's circumference to its diameter: Eskimo Pi

There are lots of things to do on a Cruise.
I’m looking forward to great food…

2000 pounds of Chinese soup: Won ton
453.6 graham crackers: 1 pound cake
1 kilogram of falling figs: 1 Fig Newton

formal dinner parties…

1 millionth mouthwash: 1 microscope

365.25 days of drinking low-calorie beer because it's less filling: 1 lite year

movies...

16.5 feet in the Twilight Zone: 1 Rod Sterling
2200 Mockingbirds:
two kilomockingbirds

weight rooms . . .

1000 aches: 1 megahurtz

church services . . .

an evangelist carries with God: 1 billigram

comedians...

Shortest distance between two jokes: a straight line

monologs...

5 dialogs: decalog

small cabins...

A Half-Bath: demijohn

exercise bikes...

1 million bicycles: 2 megacycles

gambling...

10 cards: 1 decacards
8 nickels: 2 paradigms

bands...

1 mllion billion picolos: 1 gigolo

The Swing Thru’s celebrate their 26th Anniversary this year and we are planning a very special Anniversary Dance this year. Roger Schappel will be calling and Ty Rotrck will be cueing on September 19, 2003. Ty and Ann were awarded a special Round-A-Lab Silver Circle Award this year.

After the cruise, my son and I will do a whirlwind tour of Washington and Oregon.
We have tickets to our first Baseball game in a stadium with a retractable roof (pointed out by Michael just this morning).

2.4 statute miles of intravenous surgical tubing
 at Yale University Hospital:
1 I.V. League

We will also visit three new State Capitols (Alaska, Washington & Oregon).

100 Senators: not 1 decision

After such a hot summer, the Swing Thru’s are looking forward to the cooler weather and the beautiful colors of fall. We want to invite each and every one of you to come out to the Victory Grange, just south of I-70 and Tower Road and dance with us.
We always have fun at a Swing Thru’s Dance.
We have great callers lined up for the rest of the year.
Please come and dance with us!
I’ll even show you some pictures of Alaska!!
